When is anxiety a problem worth treating?
Anxiety is not a defect. It is a threat-detection system doing its job, and everyone has one. It becomes worth treating when it starts making your decisions for you: when you take the long way to avoid the bridge, turn down the job because of the presentation, leave the party early, cancel the appointment, or spend the evening researching a symptom instead of living. The clinical line is not how bad it feels. It is how much of your life the avoidance has quietly taken.
The good news is unusually good. Anxiety disorders are among the most treatable conditions in mental health, and the treatments are specific: cognitive behavioral therapy for the thinking, exposure for the avoidance, acceptance and commitment therapy for the fight against the feeling itself. A course is often measured in months, not years. What matters is finding someone trained in those methods rather than someone who simply listens well while you describe the same worry each week — which is comforting, and which is how people stay anxious for a decade.
